Yes. A hold can only be placed on a book that is already checked out. If a book is on the shelf in the library, a hold cannot be placed on it.

Placing a hold on a book requires a current library account. When an item with a hold is returned to the library, the hold is activated and the item is held at the Circulation Desk for pickup. Library staff will contact you to inform you that the book is ready, and will be kept on hold for 1 week.
